Mentoring
Participant Guidelines
For Mentors
The
mentor's role is to respond to the protégé's
developmental needs. The mentor should not impose his/her
own agenda.
For
Protégés
The protégé should identify and prioritise
developmental needs and drive the agenda.
To
enhance the mentor and protégé relationship:
- At
the outset, the roles of mentor and protégé
should be agreed.
- Both
parties should take equal responsibility for progression
of the mentoring partnership.
- The
mentor should provide constructive feedback to the protégé,
while the protégé should attempt to tackle
any areas for development.
- Any
matters discussed between the mentor and protégé
should be treated as confidential.
- The
mentor and protégé should be open and truthful
with each other and in connection with the relationship
itself at all times.
General
logistics, suggested timing and caveats:
- It
is suggested that an initial commitment of 3 months is
established The relationship should last for a mutually
agreed time period, whereupon it can be continued or terminated.
- The
mentor will initiate the first mentoring session and review
the guidelines with the protégé. The mentor
and protégé will also establish meeting
goals and frequency.
- Where
possible (depending on both parties' geographical location)
the frequency and length of meetings should be mutually
agreed, along with the means of contact between meetings
for minor issues.
- Both
mentor and protégé should share responsibility
for the smooth winding down of the relationship once it
has achieved its purpose and, for informing the Institution.
- Either
party may terminate the relationship after discussing
the matter with one another first ensuring mutual respect
and understanding of the conclusion.
Note: The mentoring relationship is entirely voluntary
for both parties. PMI does not reimburse any expenditure.
PMI assists in facilitating the process of matching protégés
with mentors; the responsibility of mentoring is solely
between the Mentor and Protégé.
