Annual Membership Meeting a Great Success

by Frank Parth, PMP, Consulting SIG Chair
Consulting SIG Chair, Frank Parth,  leading the    Annual Membership Meeting in Seattle.
For the first time in years the SIG held its annual business meeting in October between the PMI® Leadership Development Conference and the North American Global Congress. This allowed our members who were attending the Congress, to also participate directly in the Annual Meeting. The meeting was
highly successful in terms of discussing directly with our members what is going on in the SIG and receiving suggestions, ideas, and lots of input on where the SIG should be going and what we could offer our members. We had over 40 people attending in person as well as those who attended by conference call. View the presentation.
  Mohammad Iqbal
   VP Programs, presenting
the SIG's  Mentoring    Program at the
   Leadership Showcase.

Just before the Annual Business Meeting we had our quarterly board meeting. Usually, the board meetings last a full day and we discuss how we can best provide services and offerings to our members. This meeting had to be cut short since Mohammad Iqbal, VP Programs, delivered a well-attended presentation on the SIG's mentoring program at the Leadership Showcase.

Since this is a truly international group, we have officers from overseas who cannot always take three days off to attend a one-day meeting. Normally we know about this ahead of time and the officers can call-in to the meeting. This time, however, one of the officers that we expected, Albert Matha from Cameroon, simply did not show up. We found out two weeks later that Albert had been seriously injured while working at
a power substation. He was unconscious for eight days and will require a long recovery period. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to Albert and his family.

Of all the SIGs within PMI, the Consulting SIG is one of the most interesting. Our membership is comprised of professionals from all over the world, from all different industries, and from all sizes of consulting groups. The only thing we have in common is that we all take project management, and our own abilities as consultants, seriously. We've been building a lot on what Jeanne Carey, Past Chair, initiated last year. We now have a usable web site (and Drew Marshall is working on making it more interesting), a new quarterly publication, thanks to the efforts of Drew and of Julie Stone. We are developing relationships with other organizations to bring benefits to our members thanks to Alex Nacimento. We have started a mentoring program thanks to Mohammad Iqbal. All this is possible due to the behind the scenes work of Paula Anderson, our Administrator.

What happens next? That depends on our volunteer force. The more people who can support building the SIG, the more we can offer. We all grow when people get involved. We would like to be able to post consulting job offerings on our web site as well as create a site where the members can advertise their own consulting practices and specialties. We're already working on building a best practices area. Do you have a tool, a template, or an approach you think our other members would be interested in? Send it to us. Not only does it gives something to our members it also establishes you as an expert.
