Project managers
have spent many years specifying processes,
tools, and techniques appropriate for specific project environments.
Yet we all know that none of these ensure project success.
Observing this over the years led Mr. Hornby to think about the
people and behavioral issues that arise on projects. He came to
the conclusion that projects often fail because project managers
make mistakes! This is not something that most of us want to hear.
This presentation
will identify these mistakes, the behaviors that cause them, and
how to avoid them in the future. Mr. Hornby calls them the
Ten Commandments of Project Management; ten rules applicable
to the corporate environment that will help you avoid repeated
semesters at the School of Hard Knocks.

SIG Mentoring Program Update
The
Consulting SIG's mentoring program is in full swing. We currently
have
51 Protégés and 38 Mentors from all over the world
who are connecting and sharing advice and counsel.
Why find a mentor?
A mentor is that one person who can guide you, help you, take you
under his/her wing, and nurture your career aspirations. What separates
a mentor from the average network contact, and even a direct manager,
is a committed and deep-seated investment in your future.
Where a typical
network contact might be associated with quick introductions,
exchanges of business cards, and phone calls, your relationship
with a Consulting SIG mentor likely involves long lunches and
time spent in the mentor's office. A mentor is often in a position
that you would like to be in and has the clout and connections
to guide you to a similar position. He or she is someone with
whom you probably have unusually good chemistry and who is willing
to share stories with you of his/her own climb to success. An
effective mentor isn't afraid to criticize constructively.

New Jersey Chapter to Host
International Project Management Day
The
PMI New Jersey Chapter is sponsoring an
International
PM Day celebration on 2 November, 2006.
This event will celebrate project management while extending participants'
knowledge, skills, and personal networks.
Volunteers Needed
The Consulting SIG and New Jersey Chapter is looking for volunteers
to help setup a Consulting LIG
(Local Interest Group). The goal of the LIG would be to create
an opportunity for Consulting SIG members in the area to meet and
network with each other. Consultants learn early that having a strong
network allows them to get involved in projects that they cannot
handle by themselves. This would be a perfect opportunity to expand
your network and let other consultants know what you can do.
Please contact
Judy Balaban,
New Jersey Chapter LIG Director at 609-520-4386 or Frank
Parth, Consulting SIG Chair for more information.

SIG Responds to a Recent Call to Action
In light of recent disasters around the world: tsunamis in the Asia
Pacific, hurricanes in North America, and earthquakes in the Middle
East, the "PMI Members In Need" Committee has been
formed to reach out and provide assistance to our members in need
in times of strife. The Consulting SIG Board of Directors has donated
$1000 USD to the cause. We have also contacted the committee to
determine if they would be interested in coordinating in-kind support
from our members. We'll keep you posted on their response in future
updates.
LinkedIn
Consulting SIG Members
For
those of you who don't know about the business social networking
web site LinkedIn, we think it's something worth knowing
about. LinkedIn contains profiles of all its members and enables
you to be introduced through your own network to other peoples'
networks. In essence, your personal connections (which includes
nearly 200 Consulting SIG members) could connect you to literally
thousands of business people!
Here's a link to check it out.
